Hash Generator

Generate hashes online using popular hashing algorithms. Quickly create SHA-256, SHA-512, SHA-1 and MD5 hashes from text for development, testing and verification.

Hash Generator

Everything you enter is processed in your browser.

MD5 and SHA-1 are legacy checksums. Do not use these general-purpose hashes for password storage.

Hash Generator

Generate hash values from text using commonly used hashing algorithms.

Enter your text into the Hash Generator and instantly create a deterministic hash that can be copied and used in your applications, scripts, testing or development work.

What is a hash?

A hash is a fixed-length value generated from an input using a mathematical hashing algorithm.

For example, the SHA-256 hash of:

Hello World

is:

a591a6d40bf420404a011733cfb7b190d62c65bf0bcda32b57b277d9ad9f146e

The same input will always produce the same hash when processed using the same algorithm.

Even a small change to the original input will result in a completely different hash.

Common hashing algorithms

Different hashing algorithms are available for different purposes.

Common algorithms include:

  • SHA-256 – widely used for integrity checking and cryptographic applications
  • SHA-512 – produces a longer 512-bit hash
  • SHA-1 – an older algorithm that should not be used for modern security-sensitive applications
  • MD5 – commonly encountered for checksums but no longer considered cryptographically secure

For modern security-related applications, SHA-256 or stronger algorithms are generally preferred.

What are hashes used for?

Hash functions are commonly used for:

  • File integrity checks
  • Data verification
  • Digital signatures
  • Checksums
  • Cache keys
  • Unique content identifiers
  • Development and testing
  • Detecting changes to data

Hashes provide a convenient way to compare data without comparing the complete original content.

Hashing is one-way

Unlike encoding or encryption, cryptographic hashing is designed to be a one-way process.

You can generate a hash from an input, but there is no corresponding operation that simply converts the hash back into the original value.

This makes hashing useful when systems need to compare or verify information without storing the original value directly.

Hashing passwords

General-purpose algorithms such as SHA-256, SHA-1 and MD5 should not be used by themselves for storing passwords.

Applications should use dedicated password-hashing algorithms such as Argon2, bcrypt or scrypt, which are specifically designed to make password cracking more computationally expensive.

Generate hashes online

Use the Hash Generator when you need to quickly calculate a hash without writing a script or opening a development environment.

It’s useful for testing applications, comparing values, generating checksums and debugging systems that work with hashed data.
